For many it seems as though accessing health care can be a difficult task. Those who face cultural, language, and financial barriers are even more susceptible to not being able to access the health care services they need. The core goal of EleValle is to serve as an impetus for a healthier South Valley community.

Barriers come in many different forms. Whether it is not knowing how to start seeking services, domestic violence, housing issues, food access, access to education, or simply having limited resources, there are individuals called navigators that can help community members overcome the barriers they face. Each barrier can be referred to as a pathway and with the help of a navigator, community members can receive the assistance they need to navigate the many systems available to them.

Alma Olivas is a Pathways Navigator. Her job consists of meeting with community members directly and discussing how to improve their quality of life. This one-on-one interaction with families allows the barriers to be identified and hopefully help promote positive change within the community. Alma meets with clients to help identify their problems, in many cases reaching out to seek help is one of the most difficult tasks for families. While they may just be “getting by” there are some things that could drastically improve their current quality of life, a navigator helps identify those solutions.

A navigator helps families overcome those personal roadblocks, by developing relationships with the family members. When a problem has been identified, the navigator places the family on a pathway, connecting the family with resources available to them or collaborating with other navigators to help resolve the problems.

Community based programs like Pathways are a true source of positive change within the South Valley community. They help families get in touch with the resources available to them by placing them on a path to living a healthier and better life.
